Build it, rebuild it and discover what sunlight can do. The 12-in-1 Solar Robot STEM Building Kit gives curious young makers the chance to construct twelve different moving robot models while exploring basic ideas in mechanics, engineering and solar energy.
Designed for children aged 8 years+, the kit combines hands-on construction with a solar-powered motor system. Gears, wheels, axles and connecting parts come together in different configurations, allowing the same kit to transform from a walking robot to a turtle, crab, vehicle, surf-inspired model and more.
It is a rewarding screen-free project for children who enjoy understanding how things fit together, following instructions and seeing their own construction come to life.
Why Children Love It
- Build 12 different robot designs from one kit
- Watch a finished creation move using solar power
- Take models apart and rebuild them in a completely different form
- Explore wheels, gears, axles and mechanical movement hands-on
- Each new robot creates a fresh building challenge
- Combines construction, experimentation and play in one project
Why Parents Love It
- Manufacturer packaging specifies ages 8+
- Encourages hands-on STEM exploration
- Introduces solar-powered movement in an accessible way
- Supports focused, screen-free activity
- Multiple models extend the play beyond a single build
- Step-by-step construction creates a rewarding project from individual parts to finished robot
Twelve Robots from One Kit
This is not a build-it-once construction set.
The components can be rearranged to create 12 different robot configurations, each using the shared mechanical and solar-powered system in a different way.
The models shown on the product packaging are:
- Surf-bot
- Walker-bot
- Crab-bot
- Slither-bot
- Beetle-bot
- Turtle-bot
- Auto-bot
- Row-bot
- Dog-bot
- Zombie-bot
- Roly poly-bot
- Quadru-bot
Children can follow the build instructions, complete one model, explore how it works and then dismantle the construction ready for the next challenge.
Powered by Light
At the heart of the kit is a solar panel connected to the motor system.
When the completed robot receives sufficient light, the solar panel supplies energy to the mechanism, allowing children to see a direct connection between light, energy and movement.
Instead of solar energy remaining an abstract science topic, the child gets to observe it within something they have assembled themselves.
For best results, the solar panel requires strong light, with direct sunlight providing the most reliable performance.
Discover How Movement Happens
Behind every finished model is a small mechanical system.
Gears transfer movement.
Axles connect rotating parts.
Wheels or other moving components turn the motor's motion into the behaviour of the finished robot.
Because children assemble those elements themselves, they can see much more clearly how individual parts combine to create a working mechanism.
Build, Test, Adjust, Try Again
Construction projects rarely go perfectly on the first attempt — and that is part of the experience.
A gear may need to be repositioned.
An axle might need checking.
A component may need to face the opposite direction.
Following the assembly sequence, identifying mistakes and correcting them turns each robot into a small problem-solving challenge rather than simply a finished toy taken from a box.
STEM Learning Through Hands-On Play
The packaging positions the set as a STEM educational kit, bringing together ideas from:
Science — observing solar energy and movement
Technology — exploring a simple powered mechanism
Engineering — assembling structures, gears and moving parts
Mathematics — following sequences, positions and spatial relationships
The learning happens through building rather than through a lesson sheet alone.
Fine Motor Skills Meet Engineering Thinking
Working with smaller construction components requires children to align, connect and position parts carefully.
As each build becomes more complex, they also need to follow diagrams, compare their work against instructions and understand where each component belongs within the larger mechanism.
The result is a project that combines practical dexterity with logical thinking and concentration.
Made for Curious Builders
This kit is especially well suited to children who enjoy asking questions such as:
How does that move?
What happens if this gear turns?
Where does the energy come from?
Why is this part connected here?
Instead of giving them only the answer, the Solar Robot Kit gives them components they can assemble and explore themselves.
A Project That Can Start Again
Finishing the first robot is not the end.
The same components can be dismantled and reused for another model, turning the set into a sequence of different projects rather than one single construction.
That repeatable build–rebuild format gives children a reason to return to the kit as their confidence grows.

Solar panel module
Motor and mechanical construction components
Parts required for the different robot configurations
Assembly instructions
Only one robot configuration is assembled at a time using the shared components.
A Gift That Gives Them Something to Solve
The fun of this kit does not arrive fully assembled.
It begins with pieces.
Children follow the construction process, work out how components connect and gradually watch something recognisable take shape.
Then comes the best part: placing the completed model in strong light and seeing the mechanism they assembled begin to move.
For a child who enjoys building and discovering how things work, that moment can be far more satisfying than simply switching on a finished electronic toy.
Build One. Explore It. Then Build Another.
From Surf-bot to Walker-bot, Turtle-bot to Zombie-bot, every reconstruction offers a new challenge using the same core system.
Build, test, rebuild — and discover how engineering and solar energy can turn a box of parts into twelve different robots.
