The Official Age Recommendation Comes First
Follow the manufacturer’s minimum age even when a child appears academically advanced.
Age restrictions may relate to:

Household Ingredients
Some experiment kits require familiar household ingredients such as water, salt, sugar, vinegar, oil, flour or food colouring.
“Common household ingredient” does not mean that any amount, substitute or combination is safe. Use only the ingredient, concentration and quantity specified in the instructions.
Keep experimental materials separate from ingredients intended for cooking. Once food-grade ingredients have been used in an experiment, do not return them to the kitchen container or consume them.
Do not introduce bleach, drain cleaner, strong acids, concentrated peroxide, solvents, fuels, medicines or other substances unless they are expressly supplied or required by the product manufacturer.
Food, Taste and Smell Experiments
Do not eat or drink the results of an experiment unless the product is specifically designed for tasting and its instructions expressly state that the final preparation may be consumed.
For gustative, cosmetic or olfactory activities:
- check allergen information;
- review fragrance warnings;
- use only supplied or approved ingredients;
- prevent cross-contamination;
- clean utensils as instructed;
- do not share samples where hygiene cannot be maintained;
- stop immediately if irritation or discomfort occurs.

Crystal-Growing Kits
Crystal-growing activities may contain substances that must not be swallowed, inhaled or placed in contact with skin or eyes.
Keep growing containers:

Use only the supplied formula or the precise household ingredients listed by the manufacturer.
Avoid adding:

- cosmetic products;
- ingredients taken from another experiment set.
Do not allow slime, foam, dough or experimental mixtures to be eaten, chewed or applied to the face. Wash hands after use and clean the working surface as instructed.
Homemade recipes found online should not be assumed to have the same safety assessment as the purchased product.
Microscopes and Laboratory Tools
Before purchasing a microscope, check:
- the official age recommendation;
- whether the lenses are optical or digital;
- magnification levels;
- focus controls;
- slide dimensions;
- whether prepared samples are included;
- whether blank slides are glass or plastic;
- whether sharp dissecting tools are included;
- the type of lighting;
- battery or USB requirements;
- computer or app compatibility;
- cleaning instructions.
Glass slides and cover slips can break and create sharp edges. Children should handle them only at the age and under the supervision stated by the manufacturer.
Do not examine blood, bodily fluids, mould, spoiled food, animal waste or unknown biological material unless the kit is explicitly designed for that activity and provides complete safety instructions.
Telescopes, Binoculars and Magnifiers
Never look directly at the Sun through a telescope, binoculars, magnifying glass, camera lens or similar optical instrument unless the product is specifically designed and certified for solar observation and all required filters and instructions are followed.
Direct or magnified sunlight can cause severe eye damage.
Children should also avoid using magnifiers to focus sunlight onto paper, fabric, wood, skin or other materials because concentrated light can cause burns or fire.
Position tripods where they cannot tip or obstruct walkways. Inspect lenses and eyepieces for damage before use.
Solar Observation
A standard telescope with an improvised, damaged, loose or eyepiece-mounted filter must never be used for viewing the Sun.
Solar viewing should take place only with:
- equipment expressly designed for that purpose;
- the exact approved filter system;
- all covers and attachments correctly installed;
- direct and continuous adult supervision;
- the manufacturer’s instructions followed in full.
Sunglasses, smoked glass, CDs, photographic film and homemade materials are not substitutes for approved solar-viewing equipment.
Magnets and Magnetism Sets
Magnetic STEM kits may include loose magnets, magnetic rods, balls, tiles, discs or components hidden inside other pieces.
If more than one high-powered magnet is swallowed, or a magnet is swallowed with another metal object, the pieces can attract through internal tissue and cause severe injury.
Before and after every activity:
- count loose magnets where practical;
- inspect casings and seams;
- stop use if a magnet becomes loose;
- keep magnetic parts away from babies and younger siblings;
- do not place magnets in the mouth, nose or ears;
- do not create jewellery or facial piercings with magnets;
- store the complete set in a closed container;

If a magnet may have been swallowed or inserted into the body, seek urgent medical assistance and do not wait for symptoms.
Electrical Circuit Kits
Circuit and electronics kits should be used only with the voltage, power source and components stated by the manufacturer.

Button and coin batteries can cause life-threatening internal injuries if swallowed.
Choose products with secure battery compartments that require a tool or deliberate multi-action opening where applicable. Check the compartment after every battery change.
Never leave replacement or used button batteries loose on a desk, inside packaging or in a waste bin accessible to children.
If ingestion is known or suspected, seek emergency medical help immediately. Do not induce vomiting or give food or drink unless instructed by medical professionals.
Coding Toys and Programmable Robots
Before purchasing a coding or robotics product, check:
- whether a screen is required;
- compatible devices and operating systems;
- whether an app or account is required;

- charging requirements;
- whether personal information is collected;

A product described as “screen-free” may still require an app for setup, updates or advanced activities. Confirm the exact operating method on the individual product page.
Connected Toys and Privacy
Where a learning toy connects to an app, internet service or cloud platform, adults should review:
- account-creation requirements;
- age requirements;
- permissions requested by the app;
- microphone, camera and location access;
- parental controls;

Rocket, launcher, catapult and air-pressure kits require a large, clear activity area.
Before launching:

- keep faces away from the launch path;
- never aim at people or animals;
- use eye protection when required;
- avoid roads, windows, power lines and fragile objects;

Lasers and High-Intensity Light

Water beads can expand significantly after contact with liquid. If swallowed, they may enlarge inside the body and cause choking or intestinal obstruction.

Keep water beads away from:
- babies and young children;
