The easiest method is a paper squishy. Draw two matching shapes, cover them with clear tape, seal the edges while leaving an opening, add a small amount of soft craft filling and close the final gap securely.

Use polyester craft filling or clean, soft paper tissue. Avoid food, flour, rice, liquids, beads and other loose materials that can leak, attract moisture or create additional hazards.

Homemade squishies are craft items and have not undergone toy safety testing. They should not be given to babies or children under three. Older children require adult supervision, particularly when scissors, tape, paint or loose filling are used.

A foam sponge may rebound slowly depending on its material, but a homemade project will not necessarily behave like a manufactured slow-rising squishy. Avoid recipes involving unknown chemicals, heat or products not intended for children’s crafts.

Too much paint or paint that dries rigidly can make the foam stiff. Test the product first, use thin layers and allow each layer to dry completely before adding more.

Its lifespan depends on how often it is squeezed and how securely it is sealed. Paper squishies are temporary crafts. Discard one when the tape lifts, the paper tears or the filling becomes exposed.

Only use a water-based, non-toxic craft product that the manufacturer considers suitable for the material and the child’s age. Adult supervision is required. Test it first and stop if it dries hard, flakes, remains sticky or produces a strong smell.
